LOCAL SUSTAINABLE RESILIENT

ABOUT

Borne of purpose to incorporate our skillsets into something needful, tangeable and of a greater purpose,

We are Wilder Roots.

We are a small scale, ecologically friendly farm growing mixed vegetables for direct to consumer markets and restaurants in the Asheville area. Our focus lies on producing quality food through low-tillage, building biodiversity and all things regenerative. At Wilder Roots, we believe in working with nature to usher in pure, wholesome food.

MISSION

  • Promote a localized food system through transparency and sense of story
  • Engage public in sustainable agriculture
  • Uphold organic standards as a baseline
  • Create resilient community through food
  • Promote biodiversity

STORY

Borne in the wake of Helene, we’ve begun building our market garden on once pristine bottom land shoring Little Ivy Creek north of Weaverville. Our biggest ambition is to rehabilitate the land, bringing back its luster. Here, we cultivate biodiversity, habitat and purpose. The path is long, but the reward is cultivating balance back into this tiny plot we love dear.

Goods

We specialize in lettuces and leafy greens, but love to grow it all!

We get excited by the forgotten, unique few

and trial them every season.

Above all else, we focus on seasonality and crops suited to our region.

Want to push our boundaries? We’d love to trial your ponderings.

OUR PRACTICES

01.

KEEP IT PLANTED

Soil can burn up, lose organic matter and erode if not protected. We prefer to keep it covered (better yet, with more food!)

02.

MINIMAL TILLAGE

We like to keep our soil in place by eliminating heavy tillage. The more disturbance, the more weed seed, the more nutrients can be exposed and the less good microbes we get to keep.

03.

NO NASTY STUFF

No insecticide, herbicide or fungicides used here! We wouldnt drink it, so why use it on our food? We use organic practices and look to get certified in the near future.

04.

BIODIVERSE

Promoting as many plant species in one place only benefits the whole system. From a diverse array of nutrients, to symbiotic relationships, it only stands to increace our resiliency.

05.

BENEFITIALS

Equal to diversity in plant life is promoting beneficial wildlife. Bring on the bees, owls and birds! We need this balance to keep our ecosystem in check.

06.

GOOD ROTATION

To reduce reliance on constant inputs, its important to manage good crop rotation and cover cropping. This helps keep our soils from being depleted and supports good disease resistance!
